January-Jump Start to Literacy

Jump Start to Literacy (2016) was phenomenal this year. We collected 96 books and distributed 84 books to students, parents, and teachers at our annual give-a-way. Throughout the year we continue to collect and distribute books.

"Jump Start to Literacy" begins January 1, 2017.........start collecting now!

Six R Inc. is kicking off its 5th Annual "Jump-Start to Literacy" event beginning January 1, 2017 until May 31, 2017. This program is to raise awareness to literacy by collecting a minimum of 2017 books. We would like to provide youth within the Metroplex with a book of their own before they begin their summer vacation.

Reading is an integral part of life, and those who lack the skills will find it impossible to get ahead in life. We encourage reading every day. Reading should not subside when students begin their summer vacation or take a mini break throughout the school year. Reading can be fun and should fill our youth with a valuable learning experience from the time they begin until they end.

When you are shopping this holiday season, add a book to your list. We are bringing awareness to literacy. Many children do not have a book to call their own. Let us break the cycle and give children their own book!

Here are the results from our survey in 2016:

We asked 100 children from ages 4-19 this question. "Do you own a book that you read for pleasure (fun)".

32 answered no
46 answered yes on a Kindle/iPad/iPod/cellular phone
17 answered no but check out books from school library or public library
5 answered not mine but belongs to friend/sibling

With these findings, we are extremely happy to see that our numbers have decreased with more children having their own book. We would love to see those numbers subside even more. Children are utilizing electronic devices to read more which is also a great method. We want to increase children reading in anyway that we can. Our children must read regardless of how they are doing it.

Here are the results from our survey in 2015:

We asked 100 children from ages 4-19 this question. "Do you own a book that you read for pleasure (fun)".

28 answered no
31 answered yes on a Kindle/IPad
/iPod/cellular phone
39 answered no but check out books from school library or public library
2 answered not mine but belongs to friend/sibling

With these results, we were happy to see that some find other meaningful ways to read by technology and others read even if the book does not belong to them personally. However, it was mind-boggling to find out that more than half did not have a book of their own. This does not indicate that they do not read at all but it brings awareness that many children do not have their own personal book.

Now the big question is HOW and WHY? We can come up with countless reasons WHY in a negative manner but we are going to focus on HOW and WHY in a positive manner. HOW are we going to help a child become an owner of their first book and WHY are we going to do this?

*HOW..by collecting a minimum of 2013 books to give a child a book of their own.
*HOW..by uniting as one and making a positive difference in a child's life.
*HOW..with YOUR help; community members and leaders, business owners, students, educators, celebrities, and others.
*WHY..because we encourage and embrace literacy.
*WHY..because we do not want our youth to fail in life because they cannot read.
*WHY..because we live in a country that has the power and freedom to impact the lives of everyone.
*WHY..because we CARE about the future leaders of tomorrow and know the importance of literacy.
